The Ontario Public Works Association (OPWA) awarded the 2018 Project of the Year Award during its Annual Conference & Awards Luncheon held at the Mississauga Grand Banquet & Convention Centre on January 24, 2019. Completed by EBC for the City of Mississauga, the Eastgate Park Underground Stormwater Management Facility project in the Cooksville Creek watershed earned its distinction in the Disaster/Emergency Construction/Repair, $2 Million to less than $10 Million category.

The mandate included earthworks, excavation and leveling of the land to install a 60,000 m³ retention pond over a 20,000 m² area, providing a rainwater storage capacity that is the equivalent of five Olympic pools. They planned various drainage measures, protected existing services and completed surface work including developing a park, a multifunctional trail, a baseball field, a playground and various landscaping structures.

The project won in part because of its good construction management techniques, timeliness, safety practices, efforts to minimize public inconveniences, environmental awareness, and the handling of certain unfavourable conditions.

The community continues to enjoy this public space while residents benefit from reduced flood risk.
