EBC to work in the consortium on the John Hart Dam Seismic Upgrade project in British Columbia

New mandates

By Johanne Laurin 22 December 2022

EBC is very pleased to announce that Aecon-EBC General Partnership (AEGP), a joint venture between EBC and Aecon, has been awarded by BC Hydro the first phase of a civil construction contract for the John Hart Dam Seismic Upgrade project in Campbell River, British Columbia.

The scope of work involves upgrading the earth and concrete dams to improve the seismic resiliency of the existing John Hart Dam: the value of this contract is $ 245M.

An Early Contractor Involvement (ECI) phase will commence in the fourth quarter of 2022 to collaboratively plan and prepare for construction. Upon successful completion of the ECI phase and following BC Hydro’s final project decision, BC Hydro intends to issue authorization to proceed with construction, which is expected to commence in the summer of 2023 with anticipated completion by the end of 2026.

A leader in the green and renewable energy sector, EBC has completed nearly 100 hydroelectric projects across the country. “We have been involved in the construction of dams, dikes, substations, wind farms, tunnels, and power plants, which have become one of our specialties and have made us a leader in North America. Already active in the construction of the Site C hydroelectric plant and spillway on the Peace River in northeast British Columbia, I am pleased that our team will once again work with BC Hydro to ensure that the surrounding communities continue to benefit from a safe and reliable power,” said Marie-Claude Houle, EBC’s President and CEO.

The John Hart Dam on the Campbell River hydroelectric system was built in the 1940s. The newly designed John Hart powerhouse replaced the old powerhouse in fall 2018. Vancouver Island is within the most seismically active zone in British Columbia. It is the closest region to the Cascadia Subduction Zone where the largest recorded earthquake in Canada occurred.
